Phoenix Golf Academy Student Outshines the Competition
The Phoenix Golf Academy in Sanya is bursting with pride for one of their students, Eric Zhang, returned triumphantly from Shenzhen where he won the prestigious Drive, Chip and Putt contest for his age group.
The Genzon Golf Club in Shenzhen hosted an open event to children aged 7-15 called the Drive, Chip & Putt contest. The event is designed to test the skill levels of kids in the golf fundamentals of driving, chipping and putting. It is also the goal of the organizers to increase awareness and interest in golf for youth in China. Based on this event, it looks like they are off to great start.
Hundreds of kids aged 6-12 showed up to test their golf skills against others in their age group. The rules are simple. The scoring is based on a 25-point-per-shot basis, with each participant taking three shots per skill. Each participant will accumulate points per shot in all three skills (maximum of 75 points per skill = 25 points per shot x 3). The overall champion in each age category will be determined by the participant with the most points accumulated between all three skills (maximum of 225 points = 75 points per skill x 3).
The local runaway winner was Phoenix Academies own Eric Zhang. The 7 year old dominated his age class and won in all categories, plus he outright won the overall putting contest. Eric, a student of the Phoenix Golf Academy located at the Luhuitou Golf Club demonstrated his skills by beating all the competition handily and winning the putting contest from all distances tested.
His coach at Phoenix Golf Academy, GM and Certified A1K Coach Blade Cruickshank, commented on Eric’s win. “While not surprised, we are very pleased with his success in the event. Eric has worked hard at learning the fundamental golf skills and when coupled with his natural abilities and competitive nature he has shown the talent necessary to win on a bigger stage. Golf is all about mastering the fundamentals and we think his dominant win proves out this perspective and training method.”
As to young Mr. Zhang. When asked about his win he responded. “I love to beat all the other kids.” Seems that sums up his approach. Watch for more from this outstanding young man.
